The Delhi Police is likely to file a chargesheet next week in a case registered against author Arundhati Roy and a former professor from Kashmir under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, official sources said on Tuesday. Roy and former Central University of Kashmir professor Sheikh Shaukat Hussain were booked for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at a conference organised under the banner of ‘Azadi-The Only Way’ at LTG Auditorium, Copernicus Marg on October 21, 2010.
The FIR was registered at the Tilak Marg police station on the complaint of Sushil Pandit, a social activist from Kashmir, following the order of the Metropolitan Magistrate New Delhi court. Later, the case was transferred to the Delhi Police Crime Branch for further investigation. According to official sources, the Crime Branch has prepared a charge sheet of more than a thousand pages, in which a case has been registered against Roy and Hussain on the basis of several videos and forensic evidence.
Sources said the police have cited statements of more than six eyewitnesses. A forensic report on the video that surfaced on social media has also been submitted as part of the investigation. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Friday gave his approval to prosecute him under Section 45(1) of the UAPA.
